The direct answer

For a replacement, start with the light source and procedure specified for your vehicle. A factory LED headlamp and an LED bulb advertised for a halogen socket are different propositions. Connector fit alone does not establish the right beam, thermal behavior, electrical behavior or legal use.

Halogen filament, HID arc and LED module shown as different source systems.

Compare systems before products

SystemWhat creates lightWhat a replacement decision involves
HalogenA heated filament in a bulb.Specified bulb type, rating, seating and handling.
HID / xenonA gas-discharge arc with an ignition/ballast system.Specified source plus high-voltage service precautions.
Factory LEDLEDs with optics, drivers and thermal management.Vehicle-specific module or assembly service instructions.

The light source works together with the lamp’s optical design. A projector appearance does not prove that any LED source will produce the intended beam. HELLA distinguishes reflection and projection systems and the components that shape their light. [1]

The practical choice: restore the intended function

If a specified halogen bulb has failed, first establish the exact bulb specification in the owner’s manual and an official application lookup. If the cover is cloudy or the connector damaged, record those problems too. A different light source does not make the housing healthy. SYLVANIA’s finder explicitly directs drivers to consult the vehicle manual. [2]

For a factory LED fault, look for the service route for the exact lighting package. Do not buy a replaceable “LED headlight bulb” solely because the vehicle is listed with LED lights somewhere in its brochure; its daytime running lamp and low beam may use different systems.

US rules: a dated interpretation is not a product approval

In its February 13, 2024 interpretation, NHTSA distinguished compliant integral-beam LED headlamps from LED sources for replaceable-bulb headlamps. The letter stated that no LED replaceable source was permitted under the framework described at that time, and separated federal equipment rules from state installation rules. [3]

That is a dated interpretation, not a current approval search for a particular product. Before a conversion, verify current federal requirements, your state’s installation rules and documentation for the exact lamp and source. A retail listing or a “DOT” claim alone is not evidence that the proposed combination is appropriate. We do not certify conversions or provide a state-by-state legal determination.

Questions worth asking before spending

  • What exact lamp and lighting function is being replaced?
  • Does the manual permit owner replacement, and with what specification?
  • What evidence covers the complete lamp/source combination for the vehicle and jurisdiction?
  • Will the original caps, ventilation and connectors remain as designed?
  • Who will verify aim and address a warning or thermal problem?

Example: a package says “H11 LED”

Treat that as a product description to investigate, not a compatibility result. Record the manual’s source type, the original part marking, the vehicle’s market and the relevant function. If the documentation does not establish the proposed replacement, pause the purchase. Our checklist deliberately records your evidence without producing a “fits your car” answer.

Before calling a part compatible

Use the socket-fit evidence ladder and marking record before comparing products. For halogen handling, see why glass contact matters.
